This question has been coming up quite a bit lately in my counseling and maybe it is coming up in your life too, so I thought we would explore this a bit. Why do we let distractions get in the way of fulfilling our purpose?
We could expound at length about how we might be afraid of enjoying the life we truly want, our fear of success, our fear of failure....and they are all valid reasons we let ourselves get distracted from what we truly came here to do. In fact, they are probably ultimately at the core of our resistance.
A dear friend of mine, associate and fire walking instructor once suggested a perspective about why we avoid what we really want—helped me make some instant changes that moved me toward my purpose. He suggested we hold on to old patterns, whether they are ultimately good for us or not, because we are getting some benefit from them.
In other words, if I let myself be distracted from my purpose, I am probably getting some benefit out of the distraction. In my most recent Soul Purpose article I talk about how the
need to be needed and the
need for success, while sounding good on the outside, often become motivators that lead us into distraction rather than action in our greater purpose.
Needing to be needed and
needing to be successful both can fulfill temporary desires of the ego, but do not necessarily fulfill our spiritual purposes for living.
So here is the tip, my friend gave me applied to distractions. Discover what need is being met by being distracted. Once you have defined the underlying need, determine how you can get that need met while fulfilling your truer service in purpose.
